WE HAVE A DATE FOR OUR 35th
ANNIVERSARY REUNION IN NEW YORK CITY!!!
Thanks for all your responses. The majority opted for a reunion
on the 4th weekend of June 2001, that is June 22-24,
2001. Mark your calendars now!!! Come, make your presence
count, and we will all together have one of the best fun weekends ever!
We will start with a Spirit of New York cruise on Friday evening with
dinner and dancing, enjoy Saturday brunch at Rene Bersamin's residence
in Queens, get together that evening for a semiformal dinner dance at the
Marriott hotel, and have Sunday brunch at the hotel before we bid each
other farewell again, see you in the year 20?? Remember, we were
the golden jubilee class in 1966, so we will be the centennial anniversary
class in the year 2016!!!
Let's place bets and see who can make it to that reunion...
Please let us know if you will attend and if you will stay at the Marriott Hotel. We will reserve a block of rooms and function rooms at the hotel and make reservations for the cruise as well. As we are sure you can understand we will have to ask you to pay a deposit if you will be staying at the Marriott Hotel and attending the cruise on Friday night. Details as to deposit amounts and cut off dates will follow.
The Saturday dinner dance will be open to other UPHS alumni, most specially
to Class '65. Their New York reunion in May gave the NY organizing
group the inspiration to start planning this 2001 reunion. They have
given us the necessary technical assistance to get this reunion going.
Please feel free to pass on the information about the dinner dance to other
UPHS alum.
Planning an event like this means a lot of incidental expenses and
we would really appreciate it if classmates would be willing to give monetary
voluntary contributions. Please send in whatever amount you can to
Becky Gatmaitan Raval at 25-52 76th Street, Jackson Heights, NY 11370.
Should the total contributions be less than expected, we will have to plan
a fundraising event (which will mean more work for us...). Please
be generous, we will handle the funds with care and any excess money will
of course go to the UPHS Class '66 Funds.
So here goes, one more time, please respond to the following questions:
Will you be attending the June 22 - 24, 2001 35th Class '66 Reunion in New York City?
If so, how many, including yourself, will be in your party?
How many nights will you be staying in Marriott?
Will you need more than one room?
How many in your party will be joining the Friday Cruise?
How many will attend the Sat. brunch at Rene's home?
Will you attend the Sunday brunch at the Marriott for classmates only?
......................................................................................... | ......... |
Please reply and send your answers to the following questions by August
31st, 2000 to Becky at RMistade@montefiore.org., [cc RBERSAMI@email.usps.gov
(Rene Bersamin), mgaerlan@aol.com (Mario Gaerlan), suzaram@un.org

MALINE REPORT ON OUR FUNDS
IN THE PHILIPPINES
I got the latest figure from Foundation secretary today (Aug
31,2000) regarding our fund balance with the UPHPEIS Foundation. We have
the total of P421,267.10 which is deposited with the Foundation and
more or less "restricted" since this should be used for the benefit of
UP Integrated School. Included in this total is a dollar fund of $2,705.58,
now equivalent (@45 to 1) to Pesos 121,751. All the funds
from the US are deposited here. It used to be so easy to report to you
guys about our fund situation when I was treasurer of the foundation. But
of course I had actually "given up" the post since Dec 1998 so I am not
too updated - at mukhang sila din.
We spend only the interest on these deposits - to give cash incentive to the Tony Tagamolila Academic Excellence Award every graduation. I shall furnish details on this later.
In addition to the above funds, we have "unrestricted" funds deposited
with another bank now amounting to P131,859 -this is as of August 30,2000.
The seed fund came from the proceeds of the golf tournament. The class
decided we should have some funds which we can use for projects outside
UPIS that is why we did not deposit the total tournament proceeds to the
UPHPEIS Foundation. Instead, we donated P50,000.00 to the foundation
and put the rest in a separate fund. This gives us a grand
total of P553,126.10.

CLASSMATES VACATIONS IN THE
USA
Francis Carlos recently visited the USA for a month sabatical
on the months of April-May. He was able to meet classmates when he
attended Jeannie's BIG birthday celebration. Jeannie did not know
he was coming and Editha Quintos-Ventura introduced him as a 'friend'.
Jeannie was excited to see that Editha had a 'friend' with her. Classmates
could not play it straight and told Jeannie the truth. Francis was
really excited to see classmates, specially Kaykay (whom he has not seen
for over 30 years). Kaykay even drove Francis to his cousins home
where he stayed in the San Francisco area. He also met Jet, Joy,
Kuts, Tiks, Editha and Spike.
Benito Bernardo Jr. vacationed in the USA for almost a month touring the USA with wife and children. He started his visit in NewYork City, seeing the Statue of Liberty, Empire State Building and all the 'tourist things' in NY. They also went to Los Angeles, Las Vegas and San Francisco. His children were really excited and enjoyed their vacation. In Las Vegas, they were able to go to Paris, Egypt, Florence, Carribean, the Desert- all in Las Vegas. With his busy schedule, BB was only able to see two classmates, Spike and Editha.
Hector de Leon spend a short time of his vacation to the USA playing golf with Sam and Del in the Palm Springs area of Southern California. They also had dinner together. Hec brought his pretty and smart wife with him.
Cowa (Cora Hizon-Dilla) spent over two weeks in the States spending time mostly in Florida with her sister and a weekend in the Los Angeles area. She was happy to see some classmates; Lorna Marasigan-Obien, Joy and Spike. She enjoyed the sights of Hollywood, Walk of Fame, hand and foot marks at the Grumann theathers, Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills. She saw the Hollywood sign close up at the mountains of Griffith Park. She was in the Los Angeles area during the start of the Democratic Party Convention and saw the Los Angeles Police Department in full force, riot gears as well as the LAPD mounted police.
Classmates, keep us informed of your travels and we will publish it
here in the web. We welcome photos as well.

UPHIGH66@EGROUPS.COM LAUNCHED
AUG 26, 2000
The egroup email for the class was created on
Aug 26, Sat and almost immediately Roberto Santos (zzrob@aol.com)
was the first member who subscribed. Didi, Jet and Joey A. followed
the next day. And soon confusion followed. Here are excerpts
from classmates email regarding the UPHigh66@egroups.com from Aug 27 thru
Sept 3, 2000.
RENE 8/27
I received the message below regarding the invitation to join the is
"email" group hosted by eGroups. I DID NOT start this and I do not know
who the group moderator is. It mentions in the note that it is free. My
experience says there is nothing "free" in this world; there is a "price"
somewhere. If somebody has the time to create a WEB site for UP HIgh Class'66,
that may even be better.
However, we have a simple alternative. If you want to create a quick
note to all our classmates with an email
address, follow the steps below:
1.. Once you receive this message, click on "Reply to All Addresses"
2. Delete the entire "body" of this letter.
3. Save the message.
All you have at this point is a "blank draft letter" to all our classmates'
email addresses. Save this blank draft message.
Everytime you want to send a letter to the classmates, call up this
blank draft and write/paste/attach your letter to this blank draft letter.
If you want to save what you are sending out, save it as "another draft",
so that you always maintain this one blank draft letter that you
can use again at some future time.
Does anybody out there have other solutions?
- Rene Bersamin
DIDI
Rene, I'm a member of another group e-mail (egolfers) - and it is truly
free. I thought you were the moderator of the uphigh66 group e-mail.
Nontheless, it's the best way to get in touch with a group of people -
just send your message to uphigh66@egroups.com and everybody who has been
registered in the group gets the message.
SPIKE
same here, rene. i am also amember of another egroup and it is
free. i hear from lucio calungcagin that this is the way classs 65
share their email. However, i have to add your name to all my email
to the group (because you said you did not join the
group) to make sure you receive this email as well.
DIDI
Spike, it actually occured to me that Rene might not have subscribed
to the group because of his suggestion - I'm glad you included him
separately in your e-mail.
Now, I'm wondering who the moderator is - do we know who
subscribed and didn't subscribe?
SPIKE
Stop wondering, didi. I am the moderator - a very reluctant moderator.
I just wanted to start the group and basically have very little moderator
duties and maybe hand it off to someone else, who have some free time.
Nobody seem to have free time. I will update new addresse right now
for the first few months and get this thing going. I don't think
the moderator will be important as this thing gets going. I had made
sure that there will be no moderating of email. Every members' email
will not be censored by the moderator, I just ask that we don't forward
emails and create chain letters in this egroup.
I suggest you use the regular email addresses you list for this week. I'll update the membership status by Friday. This will also tell us who have regular access to their email. Right now, at the end of the weekend, only four other classmates are members, no Jess is not even one of them, Didi, Jet, Sonny Santos, and Joey A.
DIDI
Thanks, Spike.
Yeah, once everybody (who are now in the list) "accepts" the subscription
-there should be not much to do in terms of updating the group membership.
The problem with Rene's suggestion is that, everyone has to update his
or her own list each time there is a change.
Regards and take care. God bless.
PRUNIE 8/29
I am with another egroup, too, and it does save a lot of time and it
is entirely free. My sister Feliza and her UPhighclass of '63 are
very much into it, too... hopefully many more will sign up and we can have
our group going as well.
JOY
On first try, I got the reply that the egroup was not yet established.
On second try, I clicked on the "reply" button, typed in the word "ok"
in the body of the letter and sent it. I was able to register.
FYI.
JESS
I just registeed. I hope I did this right. How will I know if I am
already in?
BECKY 8/31
Spike I got your message but I still cannot join! It bounces
back on me. I went into the website but whatever I am doing is not
working. HELP!!!
JET 9/1
Jess,
I just checked the egroup... you're not one of those that were registered... only the following 14 people are:
Joey Arcellana, Bopeep Franco, Didi Panlasigui, Joy Enriquez, Jeannie Ebio, Prunie Esguerra (why is Al not registered yet?) Rene Bersamin, Senen Siasoco, Spike De Leon, Arturo Atega, Valorie Fullon, Sonny Santos and myself.
One thing I like with EGroups is AOL limits e-mail addressees to I think 30... this way, I can send to more than 30 of us.... our e-mail circle is not more than 40...
The thing I don't like about EGroups.... you don't get to
know the individual e-mail addresses... when you e-mail through EGroups,
you e-mail everyone... so... you'd better know the individual addresses
still... Spike --- if someone gives you an e-mail address
change, maybe you can send it to everyone in the egroup.... please....
JESS
Jess Socrates <hithere@netrax.net> 09/01/00 10:06AM >>>
Hello everyone! I am just sending this note as a "test" - just to make
sure I'm doing this right. Also I'd like to know if I also get my own message
back. Can anyone tell me if you got this note? Thanks
- Jess
BECKY (to Jess)
I got it.
JESS
Thanks Becky.
Spike, when I just wish to send a message only to Becky by clicking
on the "Reply to Sender" it automaticlly defaults to the egroups address,
NOT to Becky's address. Can you program this so we can have the capability
of replying to the sender only? This will minimize mail clutter. With the
UP Hi '65 egroup, I know that Rose Rosete quit the group because she just
could not handle the volumnous mail she was getting. There are times that
we only want to mail back to the sender.
What do you think?
JET
That's exactly what I'm talking about... that we still need to know
the individual classmates' e-mail addresses...
PRUNIE (responds to Jess)
I got your note, you must be dong it right...
To get all messages sent to the egroups address, on the Main Page click
MODIFY and you will get message delivery options... asks you whether
you want to receive all e-mails, I believe that the default, but you can
choose to just receive a digest or just check the website for messages.
SENEN -
Kamusta sa lahat!
Quick tip: to avoid being overwhelmed by the e-mail list, click on
"my profile" then select "read on web only" option . This will stop the
mass mailing and you can just read the messages everytime you log on to
egroups. I know it works for me. Good luck .
Siasoks
(Ten minutes later from Senen)
yung unang message ko mali pala. You need to click on "subscribe"
(hindi "my profile") to see the "membership options" then click on "don't
send me e-mail, I'll read on the web" and then click"accept changes" .
We'll get the hang of it someday.
Sonny
DIDI
In group e-mail, you can't mail to specific individuals. If a mail
is sent through the group e-mail facility, it is with the intention that
the message is the concern of the whole group. So it would be nice to know
how each one responds to that mail (which is the rationale for the group
e-mail) --- so don't keep your response a secret by wanting to reply to
the sender only. Hindi ba?
Re "mail clutter" - as Prunie said, you can opt to get a digest (identified by the digest number) - which consists of several mails. So you receive one mail instead of all the mails individually. The disadvantage of this is difficulty in responding to an individual mail within the digest - and you might miss out an important mail if you just "breeze" through the digest.
Let's just be careful in deciding what mails we send through the facility
- no chain letters and jokes, please. And for personal mails, send it directly
to the individual. For matters re our reunions, it would be nice to know
how each one is responding - so this is a welcome mail through our group
e-mail.
Hello, too, Jess.
Regards to all.
Didi
SPIKE
I believe didi got it right. The idea for a group email is to
have everyone read your replies.
You can always send to one address if you need to, but sending to the group is for the whole group. Senen's got it right, too. You don't have to receive any email if you change your profile and just read from the web. Senen is the only one with this options. You can also set it to daily digest, which Prunie recommends and you get all the email one time at the end of the day.
We'll get used to this.
JESS
Okay, okay, sigue na! Suko na po ako! This egroups is working, working
so well I am getting all your messages - from Becky, Del, Prunie, Jet,
Joy, Didi, Senen, Spike etc.
Do I remember someone saying Wawie is also registered? Sorry for the clutter I caused.
I'll do mine the easy way. Just get the mail as they come. And if I
need to send a message to just one person, I still have all your addresses
in my address book so, this will not be a problem for me. Next step therefore
is to get everyone registered.
(end of feedbacks)
