Maligayang Pasko at Manigong Bagong Taon!
Schedule of Events:
June 22, Friday 6:00 PM - 7:00 PM Leave Courtyard Hotel (Transportation provided) 8:30 PM - 11:30 PM Spirit of New York Dinner Cruise ($63.00 per person) June 23, Saturday - Brunch at Rene Bersamin's Residence - Games and Socials - Evening; Dinner/Dance Courtyard by Marriott (open to all UP High batch) June 24, Sunday - Brunch at the Hotel (Classmates only) |
Hello there! Although UPHS Class 65 used the Spirit of New York cruise at their reunion, we decided to look at other options (like World Yacht) to make sure we would have the best for our Friday evening (June 22) event. Mario Gaerlan did the research and we are now decided on the Spirit of New York cruise. We thought you would appreciate having the following information:
Spirit Cruises has 17 years of sailing experience in 8 cities - New
York, New Jersey, Wash. DC, Chicago, Seattle, Norfolk, Boston, and Philadelphia.
Their starlight dinner buffet cruise lasts three-hours. Although sailing
hours may
change depending on the season, it is now from 8:30 - 11:30 P.M.
It features two live dance bands and an upbeat high energy professional
show. The ship sails down the East & Hudson Rivers and through
the Inner Harbor that
shows New York's breathtaking skyline and waterfront landmarks including
the Statueof Liberty. The buffet dinner includes mesclun salad with
fresh mozzarellaand cherry tomatoes, four entrees (hand carved roast angus
beef, roast
sugar-cured smoked ham, roast chicken breast roma, and penne pasta
with a creamy basil tomato sauce), three side dishes (rice pilaf, sauteed
belgian dill carrots, spinach souffle), and dessert and coffee & tea.
The group's discounted price is $63.00 per person (adults and children
are the same price) inclusive of meal, cruise and entertainment tax.
They also have a fully stocked cash bar. We will also arrange for
transportation from the hotel to the cruise's departure pier and
back to the hotel. Hopefully, we will have enough cars to use and
if not, we will use a reliable car
service and pay the cost from our class funds.
When we sign the contract with Spirit Cruise, we have to pay 33% of
the totalcost for the entire group. The entire balance is due 45
days before the date of sail. A full refund will be given if cancellation
is made before 45 days from the date of sail. To minimize the collection
and bookkeeping work for the organizing group, we request that all classmates
pay the entire cost of the cruise in one payment. Besides minimizing
the work for the organizing group, think of it as spreading the entire
cost of the reunion for your family through several months. It will
be like paying in installments first the cruise cost, then the dinner dance
expense will be due when we sign the contract with the Marriott, then your
transportation costs, and the final bill you will have to pay will be on
your own credit cards for all
your New York City expenses! A reunion bank account will be opened
by Becky and all voluntary contributions, cruise, (and later dinner dance)
payments received will be deposited into this account. We would appreciate
your sending in your cruise checks by November 30, 2000 so that we can
sign the contract. Please make your checks payable to Rebecca G.
Raval and note on your check how many persons you are paying for.
Here is Becky's mailing address: 25-52 76thStreet, Jackson Heights, NY
11370.
We hope for your prompt response and full cooperation. If you have any questions, please let us know and we will do our best to answer your concerns. Thank you.

Fundraising for our Alma Mater - by Jess Socrates
We, graduates of U.P. High School Class of 1966, have always been known for our love and loyalty to our alma mater. For us, the four years we spent in UP High are about the most important years of our lives. These are years that will never be forgotten, forever etched in our memories and even passed on to our next generation. And because we love our school so much, our class stands on record to have consistently been the most giving to our alma mater.
After graduation from UP High, many of us went on to college to pursue
different interests and then build varied careers and our families. It
is no surprise that for years, we went our own ways and forgot about our
high school classmates. This was however by necessity and not by choice.
Because, given the chance to rekindle the old fire, 25 years after graduation,
in 1991, we once again got reunited in such a way that old ties reestablished
can never ever be broken again. From then on, we have been together for
major reunions, birthday celebrations, picnics and other social activities.
We excitedly reschedule our
work and home activities to host visiting classmates - both in North
America and in the Philippines. The internet and computer age has likewise
bonded us together on a daily basis, as we share our happiness and sorrows,
jokes and memories, offer prayers for each other, first on our E-mail lists
and now on the E-group. We are once again together daily as a group and
as classmates in the virtual world.
During our first reunion in California, back in the summer of 1991, we agreed in principle to embark on a life long project dedicated to supporting UP High, its students and faculty. We wanted to set this up to allow any classmate, regardless of financial status, to participate. We wanted a project that will allow us to help out our school every year without depleting our funds. We wanted a project that will outlive us and continue its work in perpetuity.
To satisfy all these, we decided to build an Endowment for UP High. Because we did not want to go through the rigors of maintaining a not-for-profit legal entity, we initially hooked ourselves with the Permanent Endowment Fund of the UP Medical Alumni Society in America (UPMASA), on account of my affiliation with this organization. We asked classmates to make affordable annual contributions to our Endowment. Many made annual lifetime pledges of $100 per year for life. Other smaller and larger amounts were also contributed. No amount of contribution was refused. Every dollar or every penny added on to the Endowment remains in the Fund forever. The idea is to continually build the principal monies in the Fund to enable this sum to earn interest. Then, only the annual interest earned is used to finance our projects for UP High.
Since we started this project in 1991, we have raised over $10,000.
Most of this money was sent to the Philippines and deposited with the UP
High, Prep, Elementary, Integrated School Foundation, Inc. (UPHPEISFI).
Coincidentally, our
classmates in the Philippines are major players with UPHPEISFI.
Every year, since 1992, Class 1966 is recognized during the annual commencement exercises when at least one "Tony Tagamolila Scholar" comes up the stage for an award. Of the more than 10 scholars we have supported, one is now a physician in the Philippines. We have also helped out our former teachers with some token appreciation for making a difference in our lives. Some selected classmates had the opportunity to visit Professors Ligaya Fernandez and Josefina Roque in their waning years.
While North America-based classmates shared their treasures, classmates
from the Philippines, shared their time and talents working on movie premieres
and golf benefits to complement our Class Endowment. As a result of all
these, since the
birth of UPHPEISFI, UP High Class of 1966 has always consistently
maintained the distinction of having the largest amount of money with the
UPHPEISFI.
And we will not stop with this. On account of lifetime pledges, we continue to increase the principal in the Fund. We have since moved our operation from the UPMASA to the "Friends of UP" (FUP), another non-profit organization which is broader in its scope of activities. Whereas the UPMASA was limited by law to raise funds only for the UP College of Medicine, the FUP is allowed by law to raise funds for any UP purpose. Instead of sending the principal to UP, we have now decided to keep the principal with FUP and then send the interest annually to UP. Our current balance with FUP is $ 2388.09. Of this amount, $364.21 represents interest that our fund earned last year.
At this point, 28 classmates based in North America are supportive of this project. Majority send contributions every year. Many consider their annual contribution as their "Christmas present" to their high school. Any amount contributed to this project will make you a supporter. No one is excluded. There is always an opportunity to participate since this is perpetual project.

Cat Echanis-Guzman celebrate 'Golden Years' with classmates
![]() |
From Bobby Sanchez-
I came 2 1/2 hrs late, as usual, and a good number were already there -- Noel U, Ruben S, Chuchi A, Bing S, Tito D, Loreta S,Maline A, Dante B, Orly B, Tabby C, Ginggol L, Vicky M, Gigi J, Cowa H, Bobby M, Carol P, Cynth P, Paul R, Joey R, Dick S, Alma S, Ed S, Baby Z, Fely, and of course, Cats E Guzman, the b-day girl, and her husband. All of them, except a few ladies are easily recognizable. Translated: Pareho pa rin ang mga mukha, medyo tumanda lang ng konti! Ruben and Noel made fun of latecomers, making them guess the name of a supposed-to-be classmate who was actually Vicky's husband. Of course everyone failed and put on the spot, and everyone else had fun. Other latecomers were Agnes Q, Joselito S, Rey A, Mario S, Gene S, Kiko L,Torch M, Butch J, Sue V, Butch del D, Freddie P, and last but not the least, Doy Vea. I guess everybody enjoyed it because it was too informal -- no prepared program except to talk, laugh, eat, drink, take pictures, and more talks, more laughs, and more reminiscings. That's one of the distinctives of our batch, don't you agree? Of course we had toasts to our 2 new Brigadier Generals Rey A and Gene S. B-day candles were lighted and put out by classmates turning 50. Then a short mtg: (1) Decided that the next reunion will be Nov 24, 2001 at Cats' residence again, and Chuchi will donate P20,000 to it if it will be in the same format. See? (2) What to do with the class funds -- bank requires a SEC registration which we do not have as a foundation. Chuchi the lawyer advised it's too tedious to register, so why not just put it in c/o signatories Maline A, Ruben S, and Ed S. Copies of updated class directory were distributed and alumni T-shirts were sold at a hargain. The food was superb with a lechon de leche as main, catered by Maline's fastfood and resto. There were tete-a-tetes among close friends, drinking bouts by you know who, candid conversations around tables. All in all, the atmosphere was relax, jovial, in kindred spirits, and very warm. What a batch!!! Tito D and Orly B who also belong to another batch were one in enviously saying, "iba talaga 'tong batch na 'to, ang saya, ang gulo." Oo nga! |
From Vicky Marinas-
It was definitely fun. Remember we had a 'retro' theme for outfits? The girls came in their best 60s, the boys, in their lousy 90s. Masunurin talaga ang mga babae. Pinaka-colorful si Agnes. She came in blouse and mid-calf skirt with matching socks and flat shoes reminiscent of our high school get-up. May dala pang school bag. She was laughing so much at herself. Carol came all the way from Cagayan de Oro in a becoming HS of the 60s outfit. A number of us came in white blouse with the front opening tied in knot 'ala-Sandra Dee'. I hope Tito de Gamo got our best angles. Napaka-gulo ng mga kodakan. Maline prepared for about 60 people. According to Ed and Loret around 40showed up including my hubby Lino and Fely's Andy. About 15 or so who said they will come were no shows and they missed it. Because it was Cat's BDay, she had lechon in addition to the pica-pica. Drinks were flowing served by very attentive CKiss waiters. There was no more program but we had a candle-on-the-cake ceremony for all the golden celebrators and a toast for batch 66. So who were there? Bobby Novenario who left early, Cynthia Pundol, Gilda Lagera, Cora Hizon & Carol P (pareho na silang lola), Councilor Baby Z, Tabby who is not a golden girl yet, Alma, Prof. Gigi, Sue in an all-blackoutfit. Rey and Gene were the center of attention. Pinakamaingay si Ruben at pinaka-generous si Chuchi. My husband had his share of fun, kasi hindi siya ma-i-dentify ng mga male classmates. I also saw Dr. Dick, Joselito Santos, Orly Borja, Bing Santos, Atty.Butch, Dante, Noel, Director Joey, Pastor Butch and Pastor Bobby. Paul Reyes and Mario Santos sat at our table. Francis Lumen (now the President of National Broadcasting Corp) came late. I was surprised to see Freddie Poe ('65). I had left when Doy and Torch dropped by. Freddie Guzman was a most gracious host gamely joining the banters with Cat beside him. Mid-way, Maline called everyone's attention for next year's reunion. I will stop here and let others share. *Note - we are waiting for others to share their insights as well.
Pictures will be appreicated.

Mike Gonzales Reflections
Hi folks; Becky: You should be getting cruise ticket payments for 2
in your snail mail. Sorry for the delay. I am still trying to ground my
air-legs after flying from Manila-SF-Burbank-SJ last week. And then to
find out I have been promoted to be the Tech manager for the Overseas Studies
Program here in Stanford. Yikes! More travel!
Anyway, I had a pleasant visit to our beloved UP campus (probably the
only public real estate in QC with trees) and observed the country agonize
about Estrada. I was hoping to catch the Nov 21 party at Cat's but my Northwest
plane developed mechanical trouble just before takeoff and had to change
plane to PAL- a 12- hr delay . So things are not meant to be. Back home,
I just stayed in UP and walked (often in the rain) and drove around the
campus. It seemed to be a lot more busier than my last vist and the visit
before that. Although early in the morning, I noticed quite a few joggers
running my old route around the oval. Early morning is my favorite time
in UP: The cool Nov air anticipating the coming of Pasko. Then the cresendo
shouts of puto and pandesal vendors (yes they still cart around those shinny
tin containers). Finally, of course, the pungent smell of siga and trash
being lit in someone's back yard. Ah, the sights and sounds of UP.
On my last night, Ed Sarangaya, Alma Santos, Cat Ech treated me to
dinner at Maline's who generously hosted the group at her Chocolate Kisses
restaurant. Good old 4B's. I truly appreciate the gesture. Apparently,
this was a prelim to a picnic being planned next day at Antipolo. Unfortunately,
I had to fly out of Manila on that day. (My apologies to the planners-
I will try staying longer next time. I hope they
went ahead with the picnic without me and took advantage of the Boni Day
holiday.) It was really good to hear that our classmates, some of whom
I have not heard from in 30 years, are doing well. I noticed the exchange
on this list about our former teachers. I did get a chance to greet those
who came for my dad's novena - Mrs. Pineda, dela Cruz, Miss Anonuevo, Miss
Emeteria Lee all of whom look strong and spritely. There is talk that in
the vacant lot next to ours where Ms Rafols house once stood, that they
will build a "retired teachers" home. Perhaps this is one area where our
help might be appreciated as well.
So here's my ten centimos worth suggestion: To those who are in the
SF Bay area and those from nearby cities who can came, perhaps we can plan
a picnic/get-together after Christmas. We can talk about pre NY stuff and
possible charitable activities that we can put on the table. I am willing
to organize this (email/phone) and with anybody else who is interested.
So think about it.
In the meantime, have happy thoughts for Christmas and the up-coming
Holidays. (Attached is a picture of us at Maline's, see top of page)

EDITHA QUINTOS WEDDING
Classmates from the Southern California area, and three from the North,
will gather on Dec. 23,2000 at St. Christopher's Catholic Church in Moreno
Valley, California for the wedding of Edith Quintos-Ventura. The
wedding ceremony will be at 1:00 PM and Reception will be held at Shilo
Hilltop Suites in Pomona, California. Dinnere Reception will be at
6:00 PM. This will give the classmates time to be together.
It has been five years since Edith had been widowed. Edith found
love again in David D. de Leon (not related to Spike or Hector).
The couple will honeymoon in Hawaii after their families celebrate Christmas
together. David has one child, while Edith has two. All their
children are over 21 years old. We wish the couple good luck!
Pictures of the wedding and classmates' Christmas get-together will
be included in our Web Page for January.
Best Wishes, Edith! Congratualtions, David!
